Long walk

Tijdens mijn reis door het zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten kwam ik langs de Canyon de Chelly, een kloof in het noordoosten van Arizona. Tijdens de burgeroorlog maakte de Navajo indianen van de situatie gebruik om de verzwakte troepen aan te vallen. Extra troepen werden onder leiding van kolonel Kit Carson gestuurd en de Navajo verschuilde zich in de ze kloof. Kit Carson gebruikt de verschroeide aarde techniek om de Navajo uit te hongeren en uiteindelijk moesten zij zich overgeven. Tijdens de barre tocht van 500 mile liepen 6500 Navajo naar Fort Sumner naar New Mexico. Honderden overleefden die reis niet. Het nieuwe verblijf bleek echter ongeschikt voor landbouw en na drie jaar keerden een handjevol overlevenden terug naar de kloof.
